Hi thrawn,
An "indie film" is one that isn't made by a huge corporate studio. Sure, they usually get bought up by big guys before they have any hope of a theatrical release, since that takes millions to setup. There is a bit of the underdog glow to the indie film world. The big corporations are afraid to tackle new ideas or go too far, since they might upset shareholders or advertisers. Indie filmmakers can do whatever they want, and have to get more creative due to lack of money. Classics like "Army of Darkness" and "The Blair Witch" were good examples of indie films.
