The book is one of the most widely read out there. I make jokes that people who want to look like they read a lot usually claim their favorite book is the Da Vinci Code.
It was a pretty good story. Far from the greatest of all time. Sorry for sounding so bitter but I actually do love reading. And I have read much better.
You should definatly be able to understand the movie without the book...but I can't tell you for sure without seeing it first.
