Wow! What a great film. I traveled an hour to find the closest theater showing it early (Evanston, IL). It was well worth it. I can't wait to watch it again this weekend!
Anyway, back to the question. What style of film would I like to see Javier Bardem in? First of all, Bardem really surprised me in this film. I had no idea he was so talented.
While watching the film, I thought to myself, Anton Chigurh is the first truly scary 'bad guy' since Jack Torrence (Jack Nicholson) in The Shining. He does not need to jump out of a closet or yell and scream to be effective; it's just his walk and his talk that does it.
The only thing this character was missing was a back story. I think the audience is left with a thirst for more about who he is. I would love to see Javier Bardem take on a Jack Torrence type role. A role that gives him way more camera time; a role that requires a lot more explaining of who he is and where he is going. Something very gritty and sublime, without going too overboard. The Anton Chigurh character was so eerie because he looked to real; to close for comfort. I really felt like there is a chance I could bump into a guy like that in a dark alley.
I am a huge Twilight Zone fan. I would love to see him in a remake of an episode. Something that makes the audience wonder if the lead character is experiencing the supernatural, the paranoia, or some alternate universe. Give Bardem a weird, eerie, lead role, and bring the audience into an even stranger world. An 'inside the mind of a sociopath' setting, where his reality is far from societies reality. Show us what he is seeing, then show us the reality of his actions.
I am very excited to see what other roles he takes in the future, and I am going to have to re-visit his earlier work. Past or future, however, it will be very hard to find Bardem this close to perfection again.
