I've seen it a few times. I didn't fall in love with it, but it was slightly entertaining.

American Dad has some pretty fun moments, but it isn't anywhere near the level of funny that family guy is at.

Exactly,
American Dad feels like a spin-off of family guy... but not as good. flabbybuns |

I agree. I'm not sure anyone can go from "Family Guy" to another project and live up to the expectations. But "American Dad" mostly sits there waiting for a laugh, and just fails to be funny. It has potential, with the alien and fish and overall family weirdness. But the Dad is an irritating jerk, and not in the likeable way Peter Griffin (or Homer Simpson) is.

Yep, I see the dad in American Dad a less-funny and more of a jerk than Peter Griffin as well. Peter's so loveable, and the other is.. not. I just don't care much for the characters. I would have to agree that Family Guy is a hundred times better.

Instead of trying to be funny, they try to be politically incorrect ... or just lame, hard to tell which. I liked Patrick Stewart as the Dad's boss -- but even that ended up being wasted with sex jokes.
