No to MMORPGs!

...well, I'd expect some people to react to this, but here's my side of the story:

Don't you think MMORPGs are getting out of hand nowadays?


When you think of MMORPGs, you'd say, "Oh yeah, that's what's hot right now". True enough, but the kicker here is it is in fact TOO HOT. When you get into MMORPGs, you won't feel any reason to quit playing, unless of course someone yells at you to stop or you run out of money, etc. You start the game, you finish it. And unfortunately, MMORPGs have no end.


Control is quite out of the question. MMORPGs aren't really some sort of after-work activity you do after a long day - you'll usually have to play for hours until you feel your eyes heavy (if you feel it at all after long hours). It's not some sort of coin-op game where you can cool off and get excited for a while and go home when it's over or you run out of coins - it'll only drain money and time out of you until you realize you're wasting it all anyway.


A lot of parental organizations have taken action on this and have expressed their opinions, saying that games are actually alright as long as there's the control factor left to consider. Too bad MMORPGs aren't made to be controlled - they're meant to control.

most computer games are way too time=consuming these days - get the kids off the computers and out into that sim called real life!

adults have to take more respsonsilibity for their kids's time online...

Well, yeah, of course. But its easy to say that and ignore the fact that most parents have to work full-time jobs today. Mom isn't likely to be home all the time to police the kids' computer gaming. It seems that the computer and the tv/console have become defacto baby sitters nowadays.

It is for this reason alone that I have avoided all MMORPGs. I suspect one whiff of WOWII would be enough to consume my life.

I've been playing for a long time, and for some reason I felt avoiding the MMORPGs to be a wise decision. It all appears to me like one big money-eater... and time-eater too. I felt like it'll eat away all my productivity and cash and feel sorry at the end for doing it.

By the way people respond on this thread, I feel like I did the right thing. :P


Being a father myself, I feel that I will be doing my part on this. But moderating gaming is pretty hard for me. Besides, I won't be there all the time to watch my kids (like Limeydawg pointed out earlier).

This is like anything else: moderation. You have to be your own overseer. I play Dungeons and Dragons Online and I find I have to limit my play to one quest per day or an entire day will disappear, but the laundry is magically still in the same pile as when I started.

WoW especially is really wrecking peoples lives.
But its like gambling. no one makes you do it,its your choice to play.

Games are there, play them responsibly and dont get addicted.

I agree, but that is like saying don't get hooked on cigarettes or alcohol. Games provide people with an escape from their everyday lives. It's easy to understand, given the hectic nature of life these days, to see why people would rather play games than hang out in the real world.

When I was still studying, I usually play PC games because I want to escape from the pressures of projects and exams. I just want to make myself entertained through playing these games.

But as Limeydawg says, its your own decision whether you want to play PC games to escape reality or hang out in the real world. Sometimes I find more amusing to play PC games than going to movies.

Anyway, about MMORPG, there are those that are playing those games for money. They want to get a special item and then when they have acquired that thing, they would sell it in cash.
