Play SNES, NES, Genesis, Game Boy, TG-16 Games on your PSP

This is a tutorial for anyone who wants to play thousands of rom’s available on the web for old school systems like Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Turbo Grafx 16, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and many other systems on your PSP. Don’t waste your time or money going to sites like pspdownloadworld.com that charge a fee for information telling you how to do this. This information and software is available FREE on the web. Best of all, even if you screw up, all you have to do is format your memory card.

To start you’ll need the following: a PSP (duh), the PSP USB Cable (or any A to B USB cable), a memory stick plus duo (preferably >256mb), Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (only if you’re running ≥ v2.01 firmware), Brown Ale Eboot Loader, your favorite emulators/roms.

First off, determine what version of firmware you’re running on your PSP. To check the version of your system software, select "System Settings" under the leftmost icon in the home menu, and then select "System Information". If you’re running v1.5 then there’s a crapload of extra things you can do with different programs on your PSP. Since I’m running v2.5, this tutorial is mainly for those with the latest firmwares, v2.01 to 2.6.

Follow this tutorial for running emulators, copying games, and running Homebrew software.

PSP Firmware ≥ v2.01:
First things first, download the Brown Ale Eboot Loader from here. This is a self-extracting execution file that automatically loads the software on your PSP’s memory card. If you’re weary of using .exe files, you can also download the zip file and load the files on your memory card yourself from here.

Next step is to download whatever emulators you want to use on your PSP. This website is the developer of the Eboot Loader and has links to several working emulators and Homebrew programs: http://www.fanjita.org/gta_working.html. You can also go here for good emulators. The latest SNES emulator can be found here.

Next download rom’s from your favorite rom site. Google brings up hundreds of working sites if you search for the name of the game you’re looking for and add “rom” to the search, or you can use a downloader like Bit Torrent. Some rom’s are public domain, while others aren’t technically legal, so download at your own discretion.

Now that you have all the software, load up your copy of GTA and play until the first save point. After the game save, press the HOME button to exit the game. Now plug in your USB cable to your PSP and computer and let the drivers automatically install. Next go into the "System Settings" under the leftmost icon and turn on the USB link. Run the Eboot Loader execution file to automatically install the loader. Next step is to make folders for each of your emulators in this folder: /PSP/GAME/. Then copy the files for each emulator to its respective folder on the PSP. On my PSP my SNES emulator is in this folder: /PSP/GAME/snes9xTYL/. Now make folders for your ROM’s in each emulator folder, e.g. /PSP/GAME/snes9xTYL/roms, and place your ROM’s here.

Now all you have to do is run GTA and let the game automatically load from your last save. After it loads, press start, go to “Load Game” and select the Brown Ale game save (Newcastle bottle cap) and load the game. The Eboot Loader should show you all of the emulators that you put in your “Game” folder. YOU’RE DONE! Now you can play thousands of games on your PSP for free.

You may need to tweak the settings for your emulators to get the games to run at full speed. Check out this forum for settings for snes9x TYL emulator. The NesterJ emulator runs all my games at full speed with default settings. If you have any problems along the way, check out the forum at fanjita.org or look at their read me files.

To exit from whatever emulator you’re running, hold L + R + Start for a while and it will go back to the Eboot Loader menu. To exit the Eboot Loader, press the HOME button or just hold the power off button for 10 seconds.
