The Incredibles, a Pixar animation, proves to have some staying
power.
The Box Office numbers are in, and I have to say
I am a little surprised. Sure, I had a feeling that The Incredibles
were going to beat out The Polar Express, even though it was Express'
opening weekend. I just didn't know the Pixar film would have done it on
so grand a scale.
Superheroes Place a Smackdown on a Childrens Train Ride
During this last weekend we saw the release of The Polar Express,
After the Sunset, a Bridget Jones sequel, and Seed
of Chucky [which I am still trying to figure whether it is a comedy
or horror]. This schedule should have created some competition for the previous
week's reigning champ, but The Incredibles only lost less than a third of
its audience from the original week, meaning only great numbers and revenues
again.
While The Incredibles was able to rake in ~82 million on its opening
weekend, it was able to pull another 51 million this weekend. Hot damn,
not a bad second weekend at all. This is probably thanks to good word of
mouth and the fact that The Incredibles should have a large adult
audience. The Polar Express, on the other hand, only opened at
23.5 million. This is not the numbers hoped for as the movie, with marketing,
cost about 250 million. Maybe it is that, besides some intense scenes, this
film was created with the younger population in mind. Or, maybe the film
was released a little too early to start pushing the holiday cheer. Who
knows, but The Polar Express, has some serious making up to do
to catch a respectable return at the box-office.
