Arrested Development
Most TV watchers tend to focus on season finales at this time of year. Some are thinking of the mid-to-late season shows that still provide new episodes once a week (both Jenny McCarthy and Pamela Anderson have their own comedies…I'll let you fill in your own smarmy comment here).
Select 2005 Fall Lineup
Major networks, however, need to think ahead. FOX, CBS, ABC, and UPN have already announced much of their fall lineup.
FOX
FOX looks mostly the same. Sunday remains largely a night of animation. Aside from keeping "The Family Guy" and "American Dad" in their late-season time slots, FOX adds a new live-action show, "The War at Home," to its ever-changing 8:30 slot. "The War at Home" is another family comedy (staring Michael Rapaport and Anita Barone) about a couple that can't handle its teenagers.
"Arrested Development" (a demented sort of grown-up "Wonder Years" that for some reason won an Emmy) will move to Mondays at 8:00 and "Malcolm in the Middle" to Fridays at 8:30. "The O.C.," a soap-opera-esque drama popular even with men for some reason, will continue its Thursday night reign. "House," one of the few medical programs worthy of watching, is to continue for another season at least, as well.
UPN
UPN will try to go the way of the WB (from B-class Sunday matinee horror movies about killer cats into teenage drama mainstream success, that is) with new comedies and dramas. "Everybody Hates Chris," starring Chris Rock, is a comedy about the comedian's childhood. "Everybody Hates Chris" will kick off a two-hour Thursday night comedy block.
Other stars UPN add to their repertoire are Shannon Doherty and Holy Robinson Pete in the comedy "Love, INC," and Denise Richards in the drama "Sex, Lies, and Secrets" (note the subtle name).
ABC
Two of ABC's biggest hits this year, "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," will return in the fall. ABC also adds quite a few new shows, the most noteworthy being "The Night Stalker." "The Night Stalker is a sort of "24"-esque action/mystery with a continuing plotline that lasts the whole season. It combines an element of "The Fugitive" since, instead of simply being the detective, the main character is also a suspect. "The Night Stalker" will be on Thursdays at 9:00.
CBS
CBS is really pumping the new shows. For the sake of avoiding talking about more painfully unfunny sitcoms and trite lawyer dramas, I will only mention one new show. This fall, CBS wants us to watch Jennifer Love-Hewitt as "The Ghost Whisperer." As you may have guessed, clever readers, "The Ghost Whisperer" is about a woman who can hear the dead. Is it possible that CBS doesn't see the humor in the title? "The Ghost Whisperer" will air on Fridays at 9:00. To be fair, CBS will still have good shows like "The Amazing Race" (some of the only reality TV worth watching), and the amazingly popular "CSI" in all its incarnations.
Stay tuned for updates.
