The Simpsons creators have begun releasing
information about their new season. New celebrities will jump on the Springfield
bandwagon and old favorites of the show will return.
The Simpsons New Season
It's quite a lineup. The Associate
Press reports that "Fox says guest voices for the upcoming
season include Alec Baldwin, William H. Macy, Ricky Gervais, Lily Tomlin,
Rob Reiner, Richard Dean Anderson and others. Kelsey Grammer returns as
Sideshow Bob. And, Joe Mantegna is back as Springfield's mob boss, Fat Tony."
The line-up promises two things. First, The Simpsons is not yet
tired of cashing in on their fame and the fame of others. What used to be
cult is now a boring mainstream where celebrities pat each other on the
back and assure themselves that they, too, are well-loved by Simpsons
viewers.
Also, if Sideshow Bob returns, we can see The
Simpsons decline into what The Family Guy rapidly (and alarmingly)
has declined into this summer season: a repeat of old jokes that were once
funny and now painful to watch. At least The Family Guy has new
jokes sprinkled in with the old (but I wish they would just stop with the
evil monkey bit), but The Simpsons has recycled story lines, jokes,
and characters.
Just to punch the point, the Associated Press reports, "In the season opener (dubbed "Bonfire of the Manatees"), Baldwin plays Caleb Thorn, a marine biologist who attempts to steer Marge away from Homer."
