So You Think You Can Dance? Yeeeessss.
When I first watched the pilot episode for the
Fox reality TV series So You Think You Can Dance [lame title],
I could only think that I was watching a low-budget spin-off of American
Idol. However, once the final 16 dancers had been selected, the entertainment
factor of the show took off and actually had you cheer for the contestants,
aka dancers, just as much, or more, than Idol. Is that possible?
Dancing Takes on Singing
According to Variety,
this last Wednesday So You Think You Can Dance won the 8 p.m. hour
among adults 18-49 (3.0 rating/9 share) and viewers (8.1 million), but still
remained slightly behind another reality television series Rock Star.
In a battle between what people would rather watch most, singing or dancing,
top Wednesday 18-49 honors went to Rock Star (3.2/9), which continues
to improve as INXS band members move closer to selecting a new lead singer.
Not to sound, uhh, weak wristed, but I have found So You Think You Can
Dance to be a much more entertaining show. With dancers that selected
from the studios and the street forced to dance styles that most can't pronounce,
the magic that happens on stage is shear gold. Though I am disappointed
by the loss of Ryan Conferido [you know, the guy who can dance on his head],
the show continues to impress me and I am ready to accept the fact that
the second season could only do better than the already-impressive first.
Considering the fact that FOX wouldn't dare take
attention away from American Idol, expect a return of So You
Think You Can Dance [please, new title] during the off-season. However,
let's first allow this series premiere to run its course. I am rooting for
Nick and Melody, but understand that Blake is the best dancer.
My only issue with him is that his appearance on the show is like Mariah
Carey popping up on American Idol.
On a small note, expect a huge opening for the
second season of LOST next week. The repeat of the season finale
was able to pull ratings numbers that averaged 2.7/8.

Stay tuned for updates.
