2005 Emmy Awards
The countdown has begun to Television's biggest night, the 2005 Emmy Awards. In less than 24 hours we get to look forward to 3 hours of thank you's and shameless promotions as less deserving shows and actors win awards they don't deserve. That's why I have decided to pick my own winners for this years Emmy's….we'll go ahead and call them the Vinny's. Sure I don't have a heavy gold trophy to give out, but my recognition is good enough! I'll go over the major awards and give out the Vinny to who I feel deserves it as well as predict who I think is going to walk away with the Emmy.
The Nominations Are...
Drama Series:
Deadwood
Lost
24
The West Wing
Six Feet Under
The West Wing and 24 are two shows Emmy voters will not
give up no matter how much they have declined in quality the past few years.
This is really a 3 man race between Lost, Deadwood and
Six Feet Under with the HBO shows canceling each other out in order
to pave the way for this year's top drama to claim the prize it truly deserves.
The Vinny goes to: LOST
The Emmy will go to: LOST
Lead Actor in a Drama
Hank Azaria, Huff
Hugh Laurie, House
Ian McShane, Deadwood
James Spader, Boston Legal
Kiefer Sutherland, 24
What boggles me about these nominations is the absence of anyone from Lost.
While Desperate Housewives gets 3 actresses nominations in the
Lead category, Lost only gets their recognition in the supporting
role. Keifer's nomination is more for past accomplishments than anything
and he should be thanking his gravitas that he's even nominated. This is
really a two man race between Hugh Laurie and Ian McShane. Doesn't mean
I'm going to give the Vinny to either of them though….
The Vinny goes to: James Spader, Boston Legal
The Emmy goes to: Hugh Laurie, House
Lead Actress Drama Series
Patricia Arquette, Medium
Glenn Close, The Shield
Frances Conroy, Six Feet Under
Jennifer Garner, Alias
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
I have no idea why Jennifer Garner was nominated for a series that suffered
one of it's worst seasons in it's short run (except for the season finale
which provided some hope and renewed interest. Patricia Arquette will be
totally ignored due to the strong competition in this category. Glenn Close
stands head and shoulders above the rest of the competition though for her
excellent performance in resurrecting The Shield from mediocrity.
The Vinny goes to: Glenn Close, The Shield
The Emmy goes to: Glenn Close, The Shield
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Naveen Andrews, Lost
Terry O'Quinn, Lost
William Shatner, Boston Legal
Oliver Platt, Huff
Alan Alda, The West Wing
I have no love for Alan Alda and it amazes me that he always gets nominated
for playing a jerk. It's the only role he can really play anymore and since
critics and voters love him so much expect him to get the nod here. How
this guy can get nominated for an Oscar, Emmy and Tony in one year leaves
me scratching my head. Am I missing something here? I am happy though that
Lost got some recognition here. Both Terry O'Quinn and Naveen Andrews deserved
their nominations, but O'Quinn seemed to have more of a presence through
the season and should be able to make it a race with Alda. Poor William
Shatner though. He plays such a great character in Boston Legal,
but he'll have to wait another year.
The Vinny goes to: Terry O'Quinn, Lost
The Emmy goes to: Alan Alda, The West Wing (and I shed a tear)
Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Stockard Channing, The West Wing
Tyne Daly, Judging Amy
Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy
CCH Pounder, The Shield
Blythe Danner, Huff
I look at the list of nominees here and wonder if this was all you could
come up with? Not a very interesting list here. I think there were more
deserving actresses, but it should come down to Tyne Daly and CCH Pounder.
The Vinny goes to: Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy (a great follow up to her excellent
performance in Sideways. She gets this because I really don't care for anyone
else in this category).
The Emmy goes to: Tyne Daly, Judging Amy (yay?)
Comedy Series
Arrested Development
Desperate Housewives
Everybody Loves Raymond
Scrubs
Will & Grace
Can someone explain to me how the heck Will & Grace gets nominated for
best comedy series?!? That show hasn't been funny in years. Emmy voters
are probably still worried about the effects of the Y2K virus if they think
W&G deserves a nomination. Everything else is about what you'd expect. The
thing is none of these shows even stand a chance against the powerhouse
that is Desperate Housewives. This is ABC's Sex in the City
and they are going to own the comedy awards this year, even though their
show is not really a full out comedy.
The Vinny goes to: Arrested Development (hasn't lost a beat and deserves
the Emmy more than DH)
The Emmy goes to: Desperate Housewives
Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Jason Bateman, Arrested Development
Zach Braff, Scrubs
Eric McCormack, Will & Grace
Ray Romano, Everybody Loves Raymond
Tony Shalhoub, Monk
Again with the Will & Grace Nominations. Eric McCormack hasn't
been funny in like…….well…..he's never been funny period. The man has the
worst comedic timing I've ever seen and all his jokes feel so set up and
rehearsed. I would hope that eventually Zach Braff gets the credit he deserves,
but this year he won't be able to take out Tony Shalhoub and the excellent
job he does on The Monk. I miss Shalhoub's performance as taxi
driver Antonio Scarpacci in the show Wings, but he still manages
to entertain me OCD detective in The Monk.
The Vinny goes to: Tony Shalhoub, The Monk
The Emmy goes to: Tony Shalhoub, The Monk
Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Marcia Cross, Desperate Housewives
Teri Hatcher, Desperate Housewives
Patricia Heaton, Everybody Loves Raymond
Felicity Huffman, Desperate Housewives
Jane Kaczmarek, Malcolm in the Middle
This could be the category that tears Desperate Housewives apart.
Pretty much ¾'s of the cast gets nominated and there has to be some bitter
tastes in Nicollette Sheridan's and Eva Longoria's mouth for getting snubbed
here. Jane Kaczmarek and Patricia Heaton don't even have to worry about
showing up for this because it's going to come down to the 3 ladies of DH
when the envelope is opened.
The Vinny goes to: Marcia Cross, Desperate Housewives (no one could play
that character better than she did)
The Emmy goes to: Teri Hatcher, Desperate Housewives (let the cat fights
begin!!)
Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Peter Boyle, Everybody Loves Raymond
Brad Garrett, Everybody Loves Raymond
Sean Hayes, Will & Grace
Jeremy Piven, Entourage
Jeffrey Tambor, Arrested Development
This is the one category where I think the sentimental value is going to
go in Everybody Loves Raymond's favor. For years this show has
been an Emmy favorite and both of these actors have been nominated multiple
times. Look for them to win although the award totally deserves to go to
Jeremy Piven performance in Entourage.
The Vinny goes to: Jeremy Piven, Entourage
The Emmy goes to: Peter Boyle, Everybody Loves Raymond
Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Conchata Ferrell, Two and a Half Men
Megan Mullally, Will & Grace
Doris Roberts, Everybody Loves Raymond
Holland Taylor, Two and a Half Men
Jessica Walter, Arrested Development
Here is another category where the sentimental factor for Everybody
Loves Raymond will take effect. Both Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle
deserve the many nominations and awards they've received over the years,
but this year I think Jessica Walters hilarious performance in Arrested
Development is more deserving. Too bad Emmy voters won't agree with
me and Roberts should walk away with the gold.
The Vinny goes to: Jessica Walter, Arrested Development
The Emmy goes to: Doris Roberts, Everybody Loves Raymond
What do you guys think about the first annual Vinny's? Agree, disagree?
Let me know. Send me an e-mail (vince@canmag.com) and tell me what you think.
Enjoy the Emmy's!!
Stay tuned for updates.
