Smallville
The following contains
MAJOR spoilers for the fifth season of Smallville.
Tom Welling, the young actor who plays Clark Kent in Smallville
will soon be seen in the remake of John Carpenter's, The Fog. Coinciding
with the films release will be the fifth season of Warner Brothers superhero
smash hit. Things seem to be getting off the ground for Welling, however,
according to Now Playing Magazine
we shouldn't expect to see him flying across the skies of Kansas.
Smallville Spoilers
"There won't be any flying, but so far his beat
has just been Smallville, and that will get bigger," said Al Gough, executive
producer and co-creator of Smallville.
The season five premiere, titled "Arrival", will see Clark and Chloe (Allison Mack) in the Fortress of Solitude, that will later serve as Superman's sanctuary in the North Pole. When they finally return, it won't only be a visit to the small town of Smallville. In the end of season four, Clark had graduated from High School and was looking forward to starting college in the city of Metropolis. According to Gough, the change of environments will present Kent with some new challenges.
"He'll get into Metropolis, and then when you're not in a small town where you can just zip away, what are the complications that arise from that?" Gough said. "Suddenly you're in a much bigger playing field so other problems are going to arise. How do you keep your identity secret? He's going to start to realize that he has other responsibilities other than the town of Smallville."
Season Five will also see The Man of Steel's fate intersect with that of other DC superheros that have crossed his path.
You realize Clark is going to grow up to be Superman and will be the head of the Justice League and will be interfacing with all these different superheroes, all of whom became superheroes for different reasons and don't always have the same [motivations], even though they're all fighting for the good guys," Gough said. "It doesn't necessarily mean they all approach it in the same way or all believe in the same thing. Obviously Batman and Superman have very different views of justice and have very different life experiences. So I think for us it's a very interesting way to illuminate some of these characters when they were in their formative years as well."
Characters you will definitely see in upcoming episodes include Aquaman
and Milton Fine, otherwise known as Brainiac, who will be played by James
Marsters (Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel).
The Warner Brothers website has stated that Fine's arrival on the show will
see him reveal to Clark the reason for his presence on Earth and the fate
of his biological parents. WB also reveals that Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum)
will undergo some drastic changes, and not for the better. Clark learns
of dangerous experiments being conducted by Luthorcorp and with this knowledge,
along with his father (John Schneider) running against Lex for Mayor, Clark
and Lex's relationship deteriorates. By the end of fifth season, Clark and
Lex will become 'mortal enemies'.
For die hard Superman fans, Warner Home Video will release the
complete first season of The Adventures of Superman, the classic
1950s series starring George Reeves, on October 18.
Season five of Smallville begins on Thursday, September 29, at
8 p.m. E.T. on The WB
Stay tuned for updates.
