Rock band Green Day and rapper 50 Cent went home the big winners at Tuesday night’s Billboard Music Awards. Despite a long list of awards based on Nielsen Broadcast Data radio play and album sales, only a handful of repeat winners actually graced the stage.

Billboard Music Awards

Green Day swept the stage six times, winning Album, Pop Group, and Rock Artist of the Year, as well as Rock Song of the Year for last winter’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” 50 Cent did the same, although accepting the awards via telephone from Paris, winning Artist, Album, Hot 100 Artist, R&B/Hip-Hop, Rap, and Ringtone (“Candy Shop”) of the Year. Gwen Stefani, Shakira, Mariah Carey, and “American Idol” winner Carrie Underwood also accepted several awards each.

The show, held in Las Vegas, was hosted by former rapper LL Cool J and featured a bevy of popular talent including performances by Green Day who opened with their hit “Holiday” and the likes of Stefani, Ashlee Simpson, and R. Kelly who made an unforeseen comeback with a rendition of “Slow Wind” and ended the broadcast with an acoustic version of “Let Your Light Shine,” written in tribute to the victims of the summer’s Gulf Coast hurricanes.

The Century Award went to veteran rocker Tom Petty who humbly accepted the statue saying “We haven't always been boy scouts, but we never lost sight of the music. Let me remind you that this ain't the end. I can still kick some ass.”

Along with the trite and polite was the usual boisterous Kanye West who accepted the Artist Achievement award saying “"When I first came out I was a hot head. I thought I was the greatest. I kind of used that as my platform. After all the accolades, the Time covers, the awards, the music connecting with the people ... after all that ... my greatest achievement still is, I still think I'm the greatest."

Carey, back with the career-rejuvenating “Emancipation of Mimi” album won Female Hip Hop Artist of the Year and a bevy of statues for her ubiquitous “We Belong Together” cut. Onstage to collect her awards, Carey reportedly pulled out her Blackberry two-way where she had stored her speech, reading "It's really exciting to be able to hold these awards and stand here and revel in this moment."

Stay tuned for updates.
