Bob Woodruff and Elizabeth Vargas were named co-anchors of an expanded version of ABC News' "World News Tonight."
ABC announced last week that Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff will replace the late Peter Jennings as the official news anchor team at "World News Tonight."
World News Tonight Anchors
David Westin, president of ABC News remarked, "You need more than one anchor. One person can't do all of this." Both anchors will be needed as the evening newscast becomes the first broadcast to air live in three different time zones bringing more up-to-date material for West Coast viewers.
Its anchors will travel frequently to the site of breaking news and update stories throughout the day on the Internet as part of a daily blog. "When a big story breaks, one person will take the seat and the other will head to the airport" Woodruff promised.
Vargas, co-anchor at ABC’s “20/20” will remain with the program after her official start date. As a Hispanic/Irish journalist, Vargas affirmed elation at her new post saying "I am so proud. I know what this means to Hispanics in this country.”
Woodruff, 44, simply said in a statement “I am ecstatic at having been given this opportunity.”
Both anchors are set for an official Jan 3. start date.
