Rome Up for One
The Writers Guild of America announced its nominees for the guild’s annual awards banquet honoring the year’s best television writers. On the top of the list this year were NBC’s “My Name is Earl” and “The Office” and ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Writers Guild Nominees
Nominees are selected for drama, comedy, and new series categories. This year, additional awards for excellence will also be presented.
“Anatomy,” an ER-type medical drama with emphasis on the intern’s personal lives received a drama and new series award. “The Office,” based on the BBC’s Ricky Gervais comedy about the hum-drum life in the sub-corporate world also received two nominations for best comedy and new series as did the blue collar comedy about one man’s search for salvation, “Earl.”
Also in the running for dramatic series in HBO’s “Deadwood” and “Six Feet Under”; ABC’s “Lost”; and NBC’s “The West Wing.”
“Earl” and “The Office” will go head to head with FOX’s “Arrested Development” and HBO’s “Entourage” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Star Larry David also received a single nod for writing on “Enthusiasm.”
Surprise contender is UPN’s “Everybody Hates Chris,” based on comedian Chris Rock’s anecdotal childhood. Also up for new series is HBO’s “Rome.”
The guild also recognizes single episode writers in all categories. Ironically, in the race for best single episode of an animated series, Fox’s “The Simpsons” received all six nominations. Six of the 15-year-old show’s writers will compete against one another for the prize.
The awards will be presented Feb. 4 at ceremonies at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York and the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.
