The wait for Season 4 and Season 5 for HBO's The Sopranos took so long that we had begun to figure that the show was beginning to look for an out. Everybody's favorites have been whacked and, if they haven't, they are bound to be.
Therefore, show creator David Chase announced that we could expect a 12-episode Season 6 and then a bonus 8-episode Season 7 the following January. After that The Sopranos will cease to exist; except of course when you watch the DVDs over and over again.

Even though a lot of fans of the series may find disappointment to see an end in sight, we consider ourselves lucky to be given the so-called 'bonus' Season next year.
Chase said at a press event in Pasadena: "There will be these 12 (forthcoming episodes) and then another eight, and that will be the end."
How will the series end? Will Tony get whacked? Is Tony Jr. still a little bitch? All important questions that most are hoping to see answered.
However, the biggest question of all is whether there will be an adaptation of the series to film.
David Chase mentions that there was once a rumor for a film but now finds that every idea for the show may have been spent.
"We haven't talked about it in a long time. ... It's hard to see how it would work," Chase said. "I think what we're going to be doing the next year and a half would have been that movie."
Forget the movie, can we please put Christopher and Paulie back in the woods?
