It is no secret that technologies such as DTR and Tivo have hurt television advertisers. Why watch a commercial when you can just fast-foward through it later?
Because of all the ad skipping, ABC is willing to try something new; something they hope will not only benefit them but any fan that has a broadband connection.
According to EW, ABC will kick off a new program next month that will allow internet users to watch Lost, Desperate Housewives, Alias, and Commander in Chief on their official website only a day after they air on television.
That's right, never miss an episode of your favorite series' again! So, what's the catch?
Considering that you are watching a television show online only a day after it hit television, there should be no catch too great. ABC's system is fortunately simple enough to keep fans-- and advertisers --happy. While the system will come with a rewind and pause button that you can use online, there is absolutely NO fast-forward option. What this means is that paying advertisers will finally be guaranteed the viewers they paid for.
Though any internet user has the ability to open up another window and busy himself while a commercial is running, at least the commercial will now have a chance to run.
It is a brilliant idea and we can only hope that other networks jump on the wagon.
