So far, all of Bonnie Hunt’s TV vehicles have been short-lived. After The Building, The Bonnie Hunt Show and Life With Bonnie, Hunt has not given up on TV. Thought it was strange to be asked again, she created another pilot which she’s hoping gets a chance.
Bonnie Hunt on Crimes and Dating
“ABC started calling me shortly after Life With Bonnie was cancelled to come back and do something which always kills me,” she said. “It’s the same thing I had with CBS when they cancelled my show. They called me to come back. And I always say to them to same thing, ‘Well, I’m going to write the way I write.’ ‘Yeah, well, that’s what we want. That’s what we want.’”
In the face of mixed messages, Hunt developed yet another original concept to suit her comic persona. “I did do a pilot this year for ABC called Crimes and Dating. I’m a detective who’s newly divorced and in her ‘40s and back out there in the world. It was a really thoughtful, funny and smart show. It really is. I’m hoping that maybe they’ll find a place for it midseason. I was really surprised they didn’t put it on the fall schedule because I thought maybe at this point they were willing to take that risk.”
Hunt holds out hope for Crimes and Dating because test scores suggested it is in a league above network sitcom. “When we did the focus group and the testing on the show and they asked the audience, ‘Who do you think the show is made for?’ [because] they don’t know what network. Everybody said HBO. I thought, ‘Well, maybe that’s a bonus. Maybe ABC will be really seduced by that. But no, they weren’t.’”
