HBO Documentary Films presents Mr. Conservative: Goldwater on Goldwater, an in-depth look at former US Senator Barry Goldwater, premiering Monday, September 18 at 9pm/8c.
Combining narrative and on-screen recollections from producer CC Goldwater (Barry’s Granddaughter) with archival footage, never-before-seen home movies, photos and insights from fellow public figures, family and friends, Mr. Conservative gives viewers the full story of one of the most important and misunderstood figures in the history of American politics. With interviews and commentary from Senator Edward Kennedy, Hilary Rodham Clinton (a onetime “Goldwater Girl”), Senator John McCain, Walter Cronkite, Al Franken, James Carville, sons Barry Jr. and Michael, daughters Joanne and Peggy, and many more, Mr. Conservative shows both the public and private life of Barry Goldwater.

From his beginnings as a successful businessman and US Senator to his support of “liberal” issues (gay rights, abortion) and subsequent denouncement by the so-called new conservatives in his later years, Mr. Conservative shows the ups and downs of Goldwater’s 35-year political career. While best remembered for his very public defeat at the hands of LBJ in the 1964 Presidential election, Goldwater triumphed later in his career with the 1980 Presidential election of Ronald Regan and the appointment of his protégé Sandra Day O’Connor to the Supreme Court one year later. As George Will says in the film, “People say Goldwater lost in 1964. Some of us think Goldwater won – it just took 16 years to count the votes.”
