Whose Line Is It Anyway?- Season One
I got to see a live taping of the American Who’s Line Is It Anyway and it was the best night of comedy I’ve ever experienced. They go for two hours straight and it’s all gold. Then there’s 45 minutes of technical stuff for cutaways but it’s worth it for the free show. They cut it down to 22 minutes so I always thought the DVDs should just be the full two hour tapings.
Whose Line Is It Anyway? Season 1, Vol. 1 DVD Review
They’ve put six deleted bits on the bonus features, and they’re all equally good routines compared to what makes it into the show. Even better are the two 10 minute gag reels. I recognized one of the distinct gags from my taping.
It’s not just comedians swearing when they mess up a bit, although that’s in there. There’s back and forth with censors when the audience suggests a subject that the producers can’t clear. There’s Ryan Stiles trying to take a pee break. There are all sorts of banters about the taping process that only make sense if you understand the context of the taping, and they’re assembled in the most inviting way possible for viewers to appreciate.
When they do drop F bombs, it’s not just gratuitous swearing. It’s actually messing with the format of the show. They know when a bit is failing anyway, they know when they’re in between takes so they mess with the producers and the audience then. While there’s no substitute for two straight hours of live Who’s Line, this DVD is a nice take-home alternative.
Stay tuned for updates.
