The Bachelor Rome
We all know by now the premise of The Bachelor;
a good looking guy with money who is looking for the love of his life to
marry and start a family. That is what ABC has tried to make us believe.
But since we aren’t taking drugs, we know it is about TV exposure
for both the bachelor and the prospective mates. It is also about the bachelor
getting to make out and who knows what else with as many beautiful women
as possible. Let’s face it people the only couple to get married out
of all of this was Trista (the Bachelorette) and Ryan. Leave it to a woman
to follow directions. I had told myself after the Andrew Firestone debacle
I was swearing off this program. But, curiosity got the best of me and I’d
never been to Rome, so I thought what the heck I’ll watch a little
of the first episode. How could I do this to myself? This is like an accident
on the freeway – you know you shouldn’t watch – you won’t
like what you see - but you just can’t help but look.
The Bachelor Rome- Rundown #1
Our bachelor, Prince Lorenzo Borghese, was at least born in Italy. His parents
are really Italian “royalty”. One of his ancestors was a Pope
who bestowed titles on the family. Girls we have all heard of Borghese cosmetics
so now we know about the family wealth. (His mom and brother sell Perlier
on HSN.) Lorenzo was raised in the United States, went to college in Florida,
lives in New York and doesn’t speak Italian. Now that’s the
kind of Italian Prince I’m looking for how about you? On the up side
he is a cutie.
There are taped pieces of each of the girls learning they were chosen to
be on the show. We got to see where they live or work and see family, friends
or co-workers. There seems to be a lot of 22 and 23 year olds – sort
of young if you ask me. Also shocking to me is that in 2006 there are female
doctors, lawyers and other professionals volunteering themselves for such
foolishness. It gives cattle call a whole new meaning.
Our host Chris has the typical sappy interview with the bachelor. They talk
about why he is here and what he is looking for in a woman. Would one of
them just be honest and say beautiful, sexy and loose? It is out to the
courtyard and the limo arrivals begin. There are five girls in each limo
and each has to think of some
clever way to introduce themselves to Lorenzo and try to make an impression
on him.
With 25 girls in the first episode it is overwhelming
to try to keep track of all of them. There were a few who made a huge first
impression. Heather got totally wasted at the get to know you party. She
wasn’t worried though because she thought she had an edge being older
than most of the girls and so beautiful. Sadie the socialite told Lorenzo
he should be certain of her commitment to this because it was the first
time in her life she flew coach to come to Rome. She also seems to possess
the biggest chest and her own tiara. What else could a man want? Lisa, the
self proclaimed tree hugger, definitely got the prince’s attention
by having him join her in hugging an actual tree in the yard. Desiree kept
calling Lorenzo baby – a little too Austin Powers for me and tried
to get him to make out with her. Rosella whose parents are from Italy and
speaks fluent Italian sold her car to afford the possibility of meeting
her prince. It was to be her destiny.
Andrea serenades him with an aria from the balcony. Just to add a little
twist Chris brings in two Italian girls. We are now at 27. The count will
go to 12 after this night long soiree. This makes the girls even more desperate
to get alone time with Lorenzo.
The Bachelor is shown a special rose accompanied by a pair of 2 carat diamond
earrings to give to the girl he most wishes to get to know better. What
makes a girl more competitive than diamonds? They are using all of the feminine
wiles trying to be the one to receive the rose and more importantly the
earrings. He chooses tree-hugging Lisa as the recipient. In her defense
she is adorably cute and seems very sweet.
Now the sun rises, the roosters are crowing and it is time for Prince Lorenzo
to make his choices. After the entire night of partying, getting to know
the girls and I assume input from the producers here are the keepers: Kim,
Jeanette, Jami, Ellen, Desiree, Sadie, Sarah, Erica, Gina, Jennifer, Agnese
(one of the Italians) and of course Lisa who received her rose earlier.
I’m (as much as I hate myself) looking forward to next week’s
episode to see some of the sights of Rome. We along with Lorenzo will also
be able to get to know the girls a little better. With only 12 left it will
be more manageable. Until then arrivederci.
The Bachelor Rome airs Mondays at 9/8c on ABC.
Stay tuned for updates.
