TV romances seem to be built on disconnect. Why couldn’t David and Maddie just get together, let alone Tony and Angela? ABC’s new romance Men in Trees seems to be heating up only a few episodes in. Costar James Tupper teased about the potential consequences to hooking up with Anne Heche before November sweeps.
Interview: James Tupper on Men in Trees
“I think like any relationship that goes to sex too quickly there’s a lot of issues that will have to be worked out,” he said.
Though Men in Trees is his first recurring lead, it was not his first ever love scene. “I’ve done a few other love scenes. Although I will say this, I thought it was the hottest I’ve been involved in. It is a glorious day when you can wake up and get to kiss Anne Heche as your job.”
That alone makes Tupper eager to continue the gig. “Any scene I get to kiss Anne Heche. Don’t tell her husband that though.”
There’s a Mrs. Tupper to consider too. “Yeah, or my wife,” he laughed. “I’ll tell you my wife’s really funny. I asked her, ‘Does this bother you? Is it okay?’ And she’s like, ‘No, of course not, it’s fantastic.’ But every time I have a scene where I kiss her I come home and she’s wearing a new dress. I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s wonderful. You’re treating yourself.’ She’s adorable.”
Heche shouldn’t get too comfortable for a while. She may have some competition for Tupper’s affections. “Well, Justine Bateman’s going to be on the show. It’s coming up. She’s playing Lynn.”
And that’s all he can say. It’s as secretive as Lost. “You can’t get anything out of them either, can you?”
