Taye Diggs got a little frustrated talking about his new show, Day Break. Since the concept is a time-bending twist where his character relives the same day over and over, the press bombarded him with nit-picking minutiae? Will you show the dock eating the shoes every episode, since it’s the same day? How will new viewers understand the show in episode 5?
Diggs Talks Time in Day Break
Diggs put his own name on the line by assuring the media he would not lend his name to an inferior project. “We know what we’re doing,” said Diggs. “The dog isn’t going to have the shoe in his mouth every single time. That would be bad TV. We’re not dumb. I’m Taye Diggs. I wouldn’t sign on for that.”
The crowd roared for his confidence, but in a more subdued moment after his press conference, Diggs explained his comment. “That came from a place of I’m an actor that I think I’ve been pretty fortunate in having a pretty okay career. Everybody on stage has that experience, and I was just basically acknowledging some of the questions that seemed a bit silly. There are so many similarities that our show shares with other shows that I think you should look at us in the same light. Some of the questions that people were asking you could ask of any television show and someone would give you a stock answer and you would get the same stock answer from us, so that’s where that came from. There’s a little bit of risk in everything in this business, but we think we’ve got it under control.”

With the time travel twist, Day Break is sure to have a lot of little clues buried for astute viewers, but broad appeal for people who just wish for a second chance of their own. “I’ve been watching kind of the trends of television lately and I think it’s a little bit of that [wish fulfillment]. People like to, for an hour or so, they want to think but they don’t want to think too hard. They like the idea that they can kind of participate in the solving of a puzzle, and then the idea that they can come back. It’s kind of like one of those long chess games you play with your grandfather, whatever. I think that’s an appeal. And then for me, as I said before, I just got caught up in 24. It’s that along with the action element and then just feeling for the characters. I think it’s a combination of all those things.”
Day Break premieres on November 15th at 9PM on ABC.
