Wendie Malick has played some hilarious characters on television. Seeing her go wild as supermodel Nina Van Horn on Just Shoot Me just made you appreciate her extreme prude Judith Tupper on Dream On. Now she has a chance to create a new memorable TV character, as the mother trying to give her daughter the perfect wedding on Big Day.
Wendie Malick on Big Day
“With this one, what I’d love to do is just keep her real and allow her to show some of her experience and wisdom, to show that that’s in there too but her frailty comes out in all this because of the pressure of the day and all of that,” she said. “So it would be fun if I could find the soft part of this woman because it’s going to be easy to go to the other one.”
If you meet Malick, you’ll find her totally adjusted and normal. She credits part of he real life outlook to the opportunity to pretend to be so neurotic at work. “I think partly because I get to do this for a living. I love what I do and I get to sort of go and be outrageous and get paid for it, and then I feel like, ‘Ah, okay, let’s have a glass of wine and chill.’”
Having only completed the pilot as of this interview, Malick is not entirely sure where the character will go beyond her initial thoughts. “We’ll find out. Pilots are always kind of strange because they’re trying to set up an awful lot of stuff in that first thing. With Nina, I had an idea of where I wanted to go but it wasn’t real clear until we got about three or four in. With Judith, I started out as the straight guy to him. I was the straight one, I set him up, they didn’t even know I was funny until the end of the first season. Then once they found out, they let her character go a little bit around the bend and that was when it really got interesting.”
