Is Nintendo getting on a high horse? More importantly, will it work?

Nintendo Fights Back

Ever since the impressive reveals of the PS3 and XBOX 360, and the lackluster reveal of the Nintendo Revolution, almost everyone had predicted that the upcoming releases will hammer that last nail into Nintendo's console-making coffin.

Knowing very little about electronics and how they work (I am somewhere above the ability to turn an original PlayStation upside down or blow into a Nintendo cartridge to make it work, but below knowing why disks are preferable to cartridges), I judge systems based on what kinds of games they offer. Therefore, when these naysayers cry doom for the console that brought us Zelda, I just shrug and say I'll buy it.

Nintendo also chooses to focus on games. They especially want to focus on the family-friendly games. After E3, which many felt justified the predictions about Nintendo, the Nintendo website features an article that more clearly presents their message.

The article informs us:

"Everyone wants to make a buck off of urban violence, suburban violence and even undead violence. Like I said, I love playing a few of these a year, then switching gears and playing something silly, or stoopid, or fantastic, or transporting, or imaginative, or whatever.

But the only place where I've seen the kind of range and originality that I NEED in a year's worth of gaming is among DS titles: Viewtiful Joe DS is adding in touch-based VFX powers, Black & White Creatures is bringing the PC smash to the touch screen (my dreams have been answered), and turn-based games are getting their due via Advance Wars DS and Age of Empires."

The dual-screen technology highlighted in the article has been Nintendo's ace-in-the-hole (they hope). I guess what interested me about this article is that I needed it spelled out for me. Nintendo is the family-friendly cartoonesque console. There is certainly a place in my entertainment center for that.

Stay tuned for updates.
