Halo 2 Map Update Disappoints

Halo 2 The Chief has looked better.
After hearing about the latest map pack for Bungie's Halo 2 I knew I had to connect my X-Box and get ready for another round of serious first-person gaming. The only problem is that the new maps Bungie has thrown our way constantly remind me of why I didn't like playing Tribes; but at least we got jet packs to fly around in that game.

Halo 2 Map Pack Update

All of the four latest maps for Halo 2 are unrealized pieces of shit. I don't know whether it is the giant dimensions of the maps or the poor design, but I could not help wanting to discontinue my X-Box live account only an hour after play the new maps for Halo 2. To make matters worse, X-Box Live seems to love these new maps, playing them more than the original set.

Now, I do admit that the new maps for Halo 2 are cool looking and do have interesting designs, but the flaws become apparent when it comes to playability.

I play Halo 2 because it is fun, exciting and offers tons of action. With the new maps available to download [required], I found myself repeatedly running to get to a location in order to experience any sign of combat. Nothing pisses me off more than to half to run my character for a minute only to get sniped in the dome from a long ranged weapon. I have never been so bored playing Halo 2 until now.

These types of larger maps should be saved for the giant team deathmatch or even large clan matches. We can even go a step farther and only allow these maps in major clan matches, where there would be an OK amount of players to keep the action hot. Putting these new maps in single player deathmatch is nothing short of ridiculous. The only new map that deserves to remain is 'Terminal', and even that is a push.

Microsoft first pissed me off by having players pay for a monthly service, X-Box Live, in order to be able to play their games online; something unheard of with games such as Counter Strike and Unreal Tournament on the PC. I am still a little curious on where this money goes? Dedicated servers? If that was true, why the hell does the game stop if the host X-Box decides to quit? If there were actual servers, like Counter-Strike, the game would continue flawless no matter what person bails out. And, if the game was played on a dedicated server, no little bastards out there would be able to cheat just by pressing their 'stand by' button on their cable modem.

Maybe I'm just venting because of how bad the play was with the new maps, but how about we adapt some of the best maps from the original multiplayer Halo? Can I get a vote for 'Hang Em High'? You bring that, I'll start playing again.

Stay tuned for updates.
