I have seen every featurette, trailer, clip,
and still for the upcoming Spielberg / Cruise film War
of the Worlds and still don't have any idea on how this
film is going to be. Therefore, it is with great relief that early reviews
are beginning to pour in.
War of the Worlds Reviews
The good people over at AICN have received not
one but two early reviews for War of the Worlds. The earlier of
the two reviews comes straight from the Germany premiere, while the other
comes from a special screening. Here is a snippet of both the War of
the Worlds reviews below:
Review
from Germany
This is a fantastic movie. It feels sooo "spielbergian" and I truly believe this will end up being my favourite Spielberg movie so far. I just need to see a few more times to see if it really holds up. There is so much tension in this movie and it utilizes some of the best elements of Jaws, Close Encounters and Saving Ryan!
Screening
Review
The action sets in 12 minutes into the movie and, from that point on, it never stops. But it's NOT the typical blockbuster movie like, let's say, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow or Crap Helsing. We never see the destruction of any major city or landmarks: everything we see is through Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning or Justin Chatwin's eyes. There's no hero that saves the day.
Talk about a great start for early reviews on War
of the Worlds. I had predicted that the lack of material placed into
the War of the Worlds trailers was either because Paramount had wanted to
leave tons of surprises for the film or Paramount really had little material.
Judging by these first two reviews, the trailers are not doing this film
justice.
