The Legend of Zorro
Wow, judging by the latest reports, it would seem
that early test-screenings for The
Legend of Zorro are occurring around the globe. After
doing an extensive search, I have located three early reviews for the film,
all of which point out that they are reviewing an unfinished version of
Legend of Zorro, so don't take them too much to heart.
Legend of Zorro Reviews
Got to appreciate the readers over at AICN, who
have submitted not one, not two, but three early movie reviews for The
Legend of Zorro starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones;
the CanMag readers typically report in scoops, theories, posters, and movie
stills [which is all GREATLY appreciated].
Anywho, the early reports all claim to enjoy the film, and all admit that
the first half is a little slow. However, they all also claim that the second
half does more than make up for the first with non-stop action. I would
hope so, considering that the teaser trailer is non-stop action. Here are
some snippets from the reviews below:
Review
1 and 2
For the most part, the movie is entertaining. However, the first hour and
Rufus Sewell almost kill the flick. If they fix the first hour before final
release, it has the potential to be one of the bigger hits of the year...
Again, I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as the first (if Mask was an
A+, this is a B+/A-), but I give the film credit for not retelling the first
film in different locations. It's a quirkier, more low-key plot, with much
less brooding, and less grand superhero themes. The child of Bandaras and
Jones is slightly annoying, but he does have an arc and a role to play (one
scene involving school house hijinks should be cut, the rest is ok).
Third
Review
Was I entertained? Most of the time. That is the goal, so it mostly worked and as I watched it I forgave them some of this other crap. But, if you want mindless entertainment with pretty stars then Mr. & Mrs. Smith is the better option.
Not bad reviews at all considering that The
Legend of Zorro won't be released till this November. Taking into account
that the original was so good, I can only hope that within the next four
months Martin Campbell [director] is able to get everything cleaned up and
ready to go.
