Dukes of Hazzard
The release of The
Island this weekend marks the end of the 2005 Summer Movie
Season. From now until late October, studios will be releasing all the projects
that they've had sitting on the shelf for years in order to try and recoup
some profit. Fear not faithful movie fans, while there will be a lot of
crap filling theaters for the next few months there are a few gems worth
checking out. Here is a list of films worth checking out to keep you going
through the next month. While they may not be the Oscar caliber or even
Summer Blockbuster worthy they're entertaining enough to keep you entertained
until schools back in session:
Summer's Not Over Yet
Stealth (July 29)
Can anything be lamer than a team of reckless,
yet talented fighter pilots battling a computerized jet bent on destruction?
Well maybe if any other director got a hold of it, but we're talking about
Rob Cohen here! This is the man that brought you one of the most unintentionally
funny action films ever (xXx). The film stars Jamie Foxx, fresh
off his Oscar win, Jessica Biel, looking hot as ever and Josh Lucas, fresh
off of……….well……playing a bunch of supporting characters in movies I've
never seen, but should. With a big name cast, a director more known for
his visual flair than his ability to tell a story and some really cool effects
look for a fun movie that won't take a lot of brain power to watch. Interesting
note: The writer of Stealth (W.D. Richter) wrote one of the greatest
John Carpenter films ever, Big Trouble in Little China.

Dukes of Hazzard (August 5)
5 words: Jessica Simpson in a bikini. Is there
anything else you really want out of a movie? I'm sure a lot of you do so
how about this, it's written and directed by Jay Chandrasekhar who is part
of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe (Super Troopers). It has a fairly
big name cast which features Burt Reynolds Willie Nelson, Johnny Knoxville
and Sean William Scott. From viewing the trailer there looks to be lots
of car jumping, explosions and sexual innuendos suitable enough for a PG-13
rating. Hey this may not be exactly like the old Dukes you used to watch
as a kid, but it still looks like a fun ride similar in tone to the Starsky
and Hutch remake a few years ago. I will have a problem though if Rosco
P. Coltrane's dog, Flash, doesn't make an appearance.

Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo (August 12)
Who here doesn't remember Eddie Griffin's classic speech about Man Whoring and the power of the "mangina"? This may not have been the funniest comedy ever, but it had its moments and if it follows the sequel rule, expect more raunchy humor and uncomfortable situations. In this slow movie month, it's all we could hope for.

The 40 Year Old Virgin (August 19)
What do you get when you mix the producers of Anchorman,
writer/director Judd Apatow (Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared)
and Steve Carell (The Daily Show, The Office, Anchorman)?
From the looks of it, you get one funny ass film. Just as the title suggest,
Carell plays Andy, a 40 year old electronic store employee who has one secret,
he is still a virgin. Things get even more complicated when Andy meets Trish
(Catherine Keener) a divorced 40 year old mother who wants to start off
slow and wants to base their relationship on a no-sex policy. With a great
cast and crew look for this to be the sleeper hit of the summer.

The Brothers Grimm
The Brothers Grimm (August 26)
A new film from Terry Gilliam (Brazil,
Time Bandits, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 12
Monkeys). Do you need any more information than that?

Two honorable mentions that might be worth checking out if you have the time:
Four Brothers (August 12)
John Singleton's latest effort to make people remember
that he was the man that wrote and directed Boyz in the Hood rather than
the guy who made Shaft and 2 Fast 2 Furious is here and
it looks mildly entertaining. The film centers on four adopted brothers
(André 3000, Garrett Hedlund, Tyrese and Mark Wahlberg) quest to avenge
their mother's death by a dangerous street gang. If anything, it's got to
better than Baby Boy….although that's not saying much.
Red Eye (August 19)
What says suspense like a hostage situation on
an airplane? Well if it's from horror master We Craven (Scream,
Nightmare on Elm Street), there's bound to be a few tense moments
that will make you jump. Wes Craven has been on a bit of a cold streak recently
and this might be the film that shoots him back to the top of his game.
