X-Men
It would be an understatement to say that the fans
of the X-Men film franchise have been delivered a few disappointments
when it comes to the production of X-Men
3. We lost Bryan Singer, then we lost Matthew Vaughn,
then we had casting issues, and then we had a negative script review. We
were only a few steps away from putting X3 on a permanent hiatus.
Luckily, Brett Ratner was able to free up some time thanks to Rush Hour
3 falling through and, besides taking the director's chair, he has
also begun to create a more impressive X3 cast ensemble than any
of the X-Men films before it.
So, who are the latest additions?
Latest X-Men 3 Casting Updates
Michael Murphy
Michael Murphy will play Warren Worthington, Sr., Angel's dad.
Olivia Williams
British actress Olivia Williams has been cast as
Dr. Moira MacTaggert. MacTaggert is mother to the mutant Proteus and former
lover of Professor X's. She also heads up the mutant research facility on
Muir Island, where she dies after discovering a cure for a new strain of
the 'Legacy' virus. The 'Legacy' virus is mutant-specific disease, which
at first causes weakening, then unsightly blisters appear, then, just before
death, the mutants' power(s) reach their maximum potency and explode, taking
the mutant with it [Legacy
Virus].
Because MacTaggert does die from this virus, it has been claimed that 'Legacy'
was not mutant-specific [she had multiple contacts with mutants] or that
the character was unknowingly a mutant.
Shohreh Aghdashloo
The latest addition to the X3 cast, Shohreh
Aghdashloo will play the role of Dr. Rao. Below is a description of Dr.
Rao provided by FilmForce:
Doctor Kavita Rao, a world-renowned geneticist, had claimed that she had developed a serum, called Hope, which could 'cure' mutants of their mutation. While hundreds of mutants immediately signed up for the procedure at Benetech, the corporate backer of Rao's research, the X-Men debated the societal meaning of this: someone comparing mutation to a disease. Still, the chance at being "normal" has weighed heavily on Hank McCoy's mind, as he considered the ability to no longer be 'a Beast.
That's it for the latest X-Men 3 casting
updates. Is the impressive cast alone enough to save the X-Men
franchise? Guess we will have to wait for the first trailer to see. X-Men
3 is currently in production with a slated May 26, 2006 release.
