Early Exorcism of Emily Rose Review

The Exorcism of Emily Rose Looks like someone needs to take a couple breaths.
One of the biggest issues I have with horror films is the fact that most can easily cover up the fact that they are extremely cheesy but just stamping the film with the horror genre. However, the best looking film to come our way this weekend is The Exorcism of Emily Rose. This film looks creepy, terrifying, well produced and is based on a real event.

Emily Rose Gets Exorcised

We have had more than a few emails asking us if The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a setup made by Sony such as The Blair Witch Project. With a synopsis like this, it is hard to wonder if the whole story is contrived.

In an extremely rare decision, the Catholic Church officially recognized the demonic possession of a 19 year-old college freshman. Told in flashbacks, The Exorcism of Emily Rose chronicles the haunting trial of the priest accused of negligence resulting in the death of the young girl believed to be possessed and the lawyer who takes on the task of defending him.

But the story is true. The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a fictionalized account of Anneliese Michel, a German college student who died during an exorcism. Her parents and the priest who carried out the exorcism were later convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to six months in prison. Even though her death was not a direct result of the exorcism parse [she stopped medication], the priest had to be defended as if it was the demons that killed her... not a medical illness.

A pretty damn good premise, with more than enough interest brought to it because it is a true story. However, is it a good film? Well, the good people over at Empire Movies [not Empire] have recently posted an early review for the film.

Nevertheless, despite the slightly misleading trailer and the deletion of a great line, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is still worth your while. It's creepy, it's dramatic, it's got a strong cast and it's really an all-around good effort by everyone involved. And the exorcism scene is the best exorcism scene that I have seen since The Exorcist, and maybe even better. I'm sure the movie did a good job of sensationalizing the actual story but even if half of what happens in the movie is true, well, I just have to say thank God that I don't know anyone who's even been possessed by a demon.

The review rewarded the film with a solid B, which is great considering that this is a horror and they really haven't been top notch lately. I actually think this film could score higher, but some critics may have a gripe with the film is the trailer IS misleading. According to Empire Movies, a good portion of the film actually takes place in a courtroom.
