It gives me an awkward feeling to here about
the adaptation of the Richard Matheson novel I Am Legend. I first
heard about this film some years ago when it was announced that Arnold Schwarzenegger
was set to star. Then the film immediately disappeared from the radar only
to re-appear with Will Smith and Michael Bay teaming up to bring the story
to the big screen. However, I Am Legend again disappeared back
in 2002 and hasn't been heard of since... until now.
Francis Lawrence Tries I Am Legend
According to Variety,
I Am Legend has been revived thanks to a script by Mark Protosevich
and director Francis Lawrence.
I Am Legend is one of the most influential vampire novels of the
20th century, and regularly appears on the "10 Best" lists of
numerous critical studies of the horror genre. I Am Legend is about
a terrible plague that has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate
enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of
the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune
to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is
the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from
everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style, Richard Matheson
was one of the first writers to convince us that the undead can lurk in
a local supermarket freezer as well as a remote Gothic castle.
This time around I Am Legend does not
have an actor set to star, but this could be a positive change from the
last two attempts. Considering that the story is based entirely on one man,
casting should not be that difficult.
