Thumbsucker
Though this weekend is filled with more than a
couple big releases, let's not over look the Sony Pictures Classics' Thumbsucker
starring Lou Pucci, Tilda Swinton, Vince Vaughn, Vincent D'Onofrio, Keanu
Reeves, Benjamin Bratt, Kelli Garnerand Chase Offerle. Sure, it may be the
underdog this weekend, but that doesn't mean it isn't a wonderful original
film.
Thumbsucker Clip and Review
It's not easy growing up, no matter what age you are...
Justin Cobb (Lou Pucci) still sucks his thumb at 17. He wants to stop and knows that his thumbsucking is disrupting his family, his love life and his identity. The only thing that changes his behavior is hypnosis therapy administered by his "guru" orthodontist. But while Justin felt this would solve all his problems and he would finally be "normal," his troubles were really just beginning. Thumbsucking was only a symptom of a deep-seated fear: that he and his father aren't good enough for his mother, and that she would leave them. Thumbsucking was the only way to soothe this fear. Once that is gone Justin spirals into manic behavior, is diagnosed with ADHD and put on Ritalin, which becomes a substitute for his thumb. When the high of the prescription drugs and a newfound success at school crash, Justin turns to pot and sex to replace his thumb.
I am slightly confused by the marketing approach by Sony Pictures Classics
for Thumbsucker. They have marketed the hell out of the film when
it comes to banner ads and the internet, but they have fallen extremely
short when it comes to TV spots and actual media. A cheap way to promote
a film is to make movie stills and clips available to web publishers such
as us here at CanMag.Com. However, there has only been one image released
for the film, and that is a simple poster. The only thing we have to go
off of is an extended synopsis, some early reviews and now this latest clip.

Anchoring the film is the key performance turned in by Pucci, who displays the remarkable range demanded for the role with total credibility. Much of his onscreen success, however, also can be attributed to the marvelous interactions that take place between his character and the well-assembled cast of adults. In addition to Reeves and Bratt, Vince Vaughn is exceptional as Justin's compassionate yet borderline-overly-involved debate team coach, while Swinton and D'Onofrio portray with subtle accuracy a loving but struggling set of parents dealing with the modern angsty teenager.
Serious but never hopeless nor overly somber, "Thumbsucker" is a welcome take on the timeless tale of growing up.
The review above is definitely a positive note
on the film and the latest clip is pretty hilarious as it shows Keanu Reeves
acting as the overbearing Orthodontist. Having my braces put on by someone
like that would have been terrifying, unless of course he broke into 'bullet-mode'
during the procedure.
