X-Men 3 Updates
After we posted some of the latest details from
what we can assume was either an early draft of the X-Men
3 script or the actual script used on set [reports claim
the latter], we figured it would only be a matter of time before either
Brett Ratner or one of the screenwriters [Simon Kinberg, Kal Penn] would
step up and answer some of the latest rumors and speculations. Heck, X-Men
fans are currently in a frenzy trying to keep up with mutant additions,
deleted mutants and supposed screenplay changes.
Therefore, we are pleased to announce that it will be Zak Penn who steps
up and tackles some of the latest questions and speculations from the set
of X-Men 3.
Penn Confronts X-Men 3 Rumors
The good people over at theXverse
have recently caught up to Zak Penn and got him to sit down for an interview
about the current developments in X-Men 3. Recently we have received
quite a few emails and a couple of blog posts asking various questions on
the film, a good portion of which are answered in this interview.
TXV: What sort of factors influence
the decision to include someone over another? Ralph Winter told us recently
that Gambit doesn't appear in the movie; do you take into consideration
the reaction of hardcore fans whose faves don't make the cut?
Zak Penn: Ah, Gambit. I feel bad for all the fans of Gambit,
genuinely, but I think they have to put it into perspective. If we DON'T
have a great way to introduce the character and do him justice in the context
of the larger story, and we already have so many great actors and characters
to service, isn't it better to keep him out than do a half-assed job? I
know Marvel feels this way.
TXV: Do you feel that certain plots or characters were locked in for X3 based on the prior films? How much of a 'blank slate' were you able to approach the project with?
Zak Penn: It certainly isn't a blank slate. You have to
try to keep telling the stories that were being told. There is certainly
room for invention, but when a franchise is as respected and beloved as
X-Men, you don't go in trying to turn it on its head. By the way, people
seem to conflate dark events occurring with changing the tone, which isn't
accurate. X-Men has always been more serious and somber than other titles,
that gives it much of its gravity.
TXV: Halle Berry says X3 is the third in a trilogy; does everyone
else view this as a final film?
Zak Penn: Third in a trilogy does not mean the final film.
So there you have it. The two biggest questions
sent into us was whether Gambit was really out of X-Men 3 and if
this film would really complete the trilogy. First, Gambit will not appear
in X-Men 3, period. Second, now we have found the source of all
the confusion created by the I - need - more - screen - time Halle Berry.
Halle Berry announced that X-Men 3 would complete the trilogy;
making most, including us for a bit, presume that this means X3
would be the final film. However, according to Penn, trilogy never means
final film.
To be honest, I hope that they do plan to continue this series, which would
further ensure that 20th Century Fox would want to get Singer-less X3
right. For the entire interview, head over to theXverse.
X-Men 3 has a new release date set for May 26th, 2006.
