For a little under a decade Francis Ford Coppola
has found a comfort zone with producing films rather than directing them.
Known for directing film such as The Godfather Trilogy and Apocalypse
Now, most should welcome his return to the director's chair with applause.
Others... not so much.
Youth without Youth Helmed by Coppola
According to Variety, Francis Ford Coppola will
return to the director's chair for the low-budget film Youth Without
Youth. Adapted from the novella by Romanian author Mircea Eliade, Coppola's
screenplay centers on a professor whose life changes after a cataclysmic
incident during the dark years before WWII. Becoming a fugitive, he is pursued
through far-flung locations including Romania, Switzerland, Malta and India.
"I was excited to discover, in this tale by Eliade, the key themes that I most hope to understand better: time, consciousness and the dreamlike basis of reality," Coppola said in a statement. "For me, it is indeed a return to the ambitions I had for work in cinema as a student."
Youth Without Youth marks Coppola's first
directing project since 1997's The Rainmaker. The Godfather
helmer -- who has concentrated in recent years on his careers as a producer,
hotelier and wine impresario -- had publicly groused that Hollywood has
mostly been offering him gangster pictures, which he was not interested
in shooting.
Speaking of gangster, Coppola has actually spent a good deal of time in
the media this year denouncing The Godfather: The Video Game released
for various gaming consoles. According to him, he wasn't allowed a say in
the matter of the video game and he concluded that the game version was
more about shooting than story; hence, a video game. You can check out the
