Elf
Due to his commitments to John Carter of Mars,
a film based on Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi story, Jon Favreau will not
return to direct the sequel to New Line Cinema's 2003 Elf, due
to time restrictions. "No, but I think they are [doing one]," he said, referring
to New Line Cinema.
Elf Loses Director
Favreau, who screened his new film titled, Zathura,
at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas this week, wasn't going to pass up on
bringing Mars to the big screen.
"That's sort of a bit of a treat project," said Favre. "Zathura
was fun and I got to wet my feet in Science Fiction a little bit. People
have been trying to make John Carter of Mars for 75 years now.
It actually was a project when Snow White was being made. It was
supposed to be the first animated feature from Disney from what I understand."
Favreau goes on to say that he won't be as PC happy as most directors are when it comes to Sci-Fi films.
"A lot of the techniques that I learned in Zathura hopefully I
can take up to the next level. We use a lot of practical effects and don't
try to do everything on a computer because I find it somewhat emotionally
alienating. I think computer technology is great for moviesm but I don't
think it's something that you should fall back on all the time. I think
you should do as much real stuff as you can and use CGI to augment it. And
we'll see how it plays with Zathura. I think it worked really well.
Maybe it's because I grew up with the practical stuff; I tend to like it
better. But that's sort of the hope for John Carter".
Elf 2, which will once again star Will Ferrell, and based on a
script by Scot Armstrong, is aimed for a 2007 release.
