Serenity could have, and still should be, the next set of sci-fi
adventure films.
Universal, like me, wants to find the next sci-fi
adventure to take us into the future. Though the genre seems to be permanently
plugged with Star Wars and Star Trek, many thought Universal
found the next best thing in Serenity.
After viewing the film [review here],
I still believe that Serenity can be the next sci-fi trilogy [and
then some] adventure to fill the black hole left by Trek and Wars.
However, the box office spoke differently, with less than magnificent returns
for the Joss Whedon pic.
Therefore, Universal continues to lead the way with their purchase of a
new sci-fi adventure from the minds of Simon Kinberg and Brett Matthews.
Universal Still Wants Sci-Fi
According to Variety,
Universal Pictures has recently purchased a sci-fi pitch that features a
story that is currently on the hush-hush. Though most aren't saying much,
Kinberg was at least kind enough to give us a general direction this next
sci-fi adventure would be going.
Kinberg says he came up with the story idea and began working on it with Matthews. "I developed it for a while, but Brett really made it his own and took it over," he said.
He wouldn't elaborate on the story except to say,
"It's more thriller than big, broad action; more gritty than other sci-fi
movies we've seen in the recent past. Almost what Bourne Identity
did for action movies, this will attempt to do for sci-fi movies."
"We wanted the science-fiction aspect of our story to be eerily plausible,"
Brett Matthews said. "For the concept to be fantastic, but only until
you really think about it."
Personally, I am still hoping that Serenity finds its second wind,
as the original television series Firefly did, with the release
of DVD.
