Steve Carell in Over the Hedge
When the teaser trailer for the Dreamworks Animation's
upcoming CG animation, Over
the Hedge, popped up, my first reaction was that this
film looked 'damn polished.' Knowing nothing more than what is told by an
official synopsis and a teaser, I now find myself waiting for Hedge
like one waits for a state lottery. There is a lot of excitement, but there
is still a lot of unknown to this film.
Over the Hedge Early Review
'Snoofy Johnson' was able to attend a screening
of a partially finished Over the Hedge and decided to send his
thoughts over to AICN. Now, when I say partially finished, I am talking
about a film that is only a quarter or a third of the way complete. In order
to fill in some of the broader gaps, Dreamworks Animation used low-texture
animations and even storyboards.
However, even with all the distractions, 'Snoofy' still loved the film.
I didn’t know what to expect with this
film; the trailer looks good and I loved the first Shrek film.
I thought Shark Tale was pretty weak, didn’t see Madagascar
after hearing it was terrible, and was disappointed in Shrek 2.
But I love animation, especially of the computer variety. I am pleased to
say that this film is a winner.
But the parts that were finished were truly amazing! The animation was better than anything I’ve seen DreamWorks do thus far. The colors were brilliant and vibrant, and the backgrounds (trees, grass, etc.) were simply stunning. They were going for photo realism (on everything but the animals) and I think they pulled it off with flying colors. Actually, it made me mad when they switched to storyboards since I wanted to see the next beautifully drawn scene. The animals’ fur was unlike anything I’d seen before – much better than Shrek or Monsters Inc. Animation and technology-wise, this thing was awesome. Too bad I only got to see about 20 minutes of such.
I agree with the person most definitely on Shark
Tale but Shrek 2 a disappointment? I think I saw the film
three times in theatres and was still happy to purchase it when it came
to DVD.
The reviewer also points out what most should have noticed in the teaser
trailer for Over the Hedge-- the animation is nothing short of
incredible, and rivals anything we have seen before.
Over the Hedge also features an impressive cast that includes Bruce
Willis, Garry Shandling, Nick Nolte, Catherine O'Hara, William Shatner,
Steve Carell, Eugene Levy and Wanda Sykes.

Over the Hedge comes to theatres on May 19th, 2005.
