Kung Fu High School
Even though The Weinstein Co's first big film, Derailed,
won't be coming to theatres until November 11th, the newly formed company
is working to prove that none of the Weinstein wit has been lost with the
latest structural move away from Miramax and Dimension. Announced today,
Weinstein Company has recently acquired the rights to Kung Fu High School,
a martial arts film that should be right up the Weinstein alley.
Kung Fu High School
According to Variety,
The Weinstein Company has acquired screen rights to Kung Fu High School,
a novel by Ryan Gattis has been picked up and scripted by Ernesto Foronda.
The film will be done as a collaboration between the Weinstein's and Dimension
films.
Kung Fu High School is the story of a school where the students
are split among five gangs, each of which employs a stylized ancient Asian
martial-arts discipline. Considering that these gangs don't exactly get
along, the high school soon receives the nickname Kung Fu High, for all
the violent martial-arts combat that occurs.
Neal Edelstein and Mike Macari immediately picked up the adaptation at a
price somewhere in the high six figures region. Due to their quick move
towards the film, the two have been awarded dibs to produce the film under
their Macari/Edelstein Films banner.
These two were also responsible for coming into contact with Ernesto Foronda,
who has the task of adapting the story to a green-lit screenplay. Forondo
is also busily working on a domestic remake of the breakout film Oldboy
for Universal.
