Chicken Little
With October coming to a close it's time to look ahead to my favorite time of the year, the fall movie season. After putting up with mediocre release after mediocre release (with the occasional gem squeezed in), the month of November brings with it a full slate of holiday blockbusters and Oscar hopefuls. So to get you prepared for the fall season here is a list of the must see movies for each week of November:
November Movie Preview
November 4th
Jarhead:
Is this the second coming of Full Metal Jacket or the embarrassment
that was We Were Soldiers? With a talented cast (Jake Gyllenhaal,
Peter Sarsgaard, Jamie Foxx) and an award winning director (Sam Mendes)
this film has all the signs of being the first commercial Oscar film of
the year. Set during the Gulf War, Jarhead follows the life of
Anthony Swoff (Gyllenhaal) from boot camp to the battle field and all the
madness that comes with it. With American Beauty, Sam Mendes showed
us he has a knack for delivering surreal character driven stories and judging
by the trailer, odds are this will follow the same path.
Honorable mention:
Chicken Little:
I don't know what it is about this film, but the trailer had me in stitches.
Picking up where the fable ends, the film follows the adventures of Chicken
Little and his oddball group of friends (Ugly Duckling, Runt of the Litter)
as they try to rescue the world from an alien invasion. With an all star
voice cast (Zach Braff, Joan Cusak, Steve Zahn), this film looks like it
could be one hell of a fun ride.
November 11th
Get Rich or Die Tryin' (actual release
date is November 9th): Rapper 50 Cent tries to follow in the footsteps of
his mentor Eminem by starring in a film loosely based on his life. The film
follows 50's life from troubled drug dealer to rap superstar. This isn't
going to be a repeat of 8 mile, but it could turn out to be a pretty funny
movie. This movie is hinging on whether 50 can join the ranks of other rappers
turn actors, but from what I've seen Paramount might not want to get their
hopes up.
Honorable mention:
Zathura:
Jumanji in space would be the best way to describe this film. Based
on the book of the same name, Zathura follows the adventures of
two young boys who decide to play a sci-fi game that turns out to be a little
too real then they expected. This film has a lot of questions marks surrounding
it, but the biggest one will be if director Jon Favreau (Elf) can
handle such a big budget production after helming nothing but smaller films.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
November 18th
Harry
Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Unless you've been hiding
under a rock the past few years you can guarantee that this film is going
to be huge. After close to a year and half wait, the 4th film based off
of J.K. Rowling's masterful series is finally released to theaters. Potter
fans everywhere consider this the best of the books so far mostly due to
the dramatic change in tone the story takes towards the end. The cast is
a little older and another new director is on board (Four Wedding's
and Funeral's Mike Newell), but expect more of the same magical adventures
that the previous films had to offer. Harry's 4th year at Hogwarts gets
a little complicated as he's mysteriously picked to compete in the Triwizard
Tournament and the many dangers that accompany it.
Honorable mention:
Walk the Line:
Another year and another biopic based on the troubled life of a music legend.
This time its Joaquin Phoenix turn to impersonate Johnny Cash and give us
an inside look into the life of the man in black. I've been a big fan of
biopic's, but this film has lots of positive buzz going for it and, if anything,
should be interesting just to see Joaquin perform all of Cash's classics
(he performed all the songs in the film without lip-syncing).
November 23rd
Just
Friends: If you liked Wedding Crashers and The
40-Year Old Virgin, odds are you'll probably get a kick out of this
one. Just Friends tells the story of a womanizers (Ryan Reynolds) journey
back to his hometown to confront the one woman (Amy Smart) who made him
this way. If that premise hasn't sold you, then I have 6 words that might
help persuade you: Ryan Reynolds in a fat suit. 'Nuff said. Audiences in
need of a change of pace from all the heavy dramas and family films out
will flock to see this film more than likely making it the sleeper hit of
the fall.
Honorable mention:
The Ice Harvest: Not to much is known about this film, but it has
a very interesting cast (John Cusak, Billy Bob Thorton, Randy Quaid) as
well as an interesting choice for a director (Harold Ramis, Groundhog
Day). Supposedly the story is about a strip club owner, gangster and
lawyer's attempt to steal money from a wealthy politician. The synopsis
is vague enough to not have an idea whether the film is an action, thriller
or comedy, but with a director like Ramis my guess is it's going to have
some good laughs.
