Following his blockbuster hit The Passion of
the Christ, Mel Gibson has been running around with the type of grace
and free reign only given to directors such as Peter Jackson. With his latest
project, Apocalypto, Mel Gibson is finally ready to shed a few
details.
Apocalypto Talk
After script leaks occurred on The Passion -- leaks
that created immediate discussion and controversy -- Mel Gibson has taken
the George Lucas approach and has kept a tight lid on just about every detail
for his new film Apocalypto.
According to Variety,
Apocalypto will be filmed in the Mayan dialect of Yucatec, and uses a cast
of local actors to tell a story set about 600 years ago, before the Spanish
conquest, in the midst of the mysterious decline of the Mayan civilization.
"And that is merely the backdrop of what I am doing," Gibson said. "Although (the Mayan culture) is an integral part of the story, what I am doing is creating an action-adventure of mythic proportions ... and I am a megalomaniac, so I like the position."
Mel Gibson, following a similar formula used in The Passion, admits
that the film will spend more emphasis on the visuals than the dialogue.
And, like The Passion and Braveheart, Apocalypto
will feature its fair share of gore.
But who to pick up a film with so much violence? None other than... Disney?
That is correct. After Gibson was unable to find a studio to support the
distribution of Apocolypto, it took Disney to finally sack up and
pick the film up. Disney currently has domestic rights to the film, but
this may change to international rights as well.
