Jarhead Jarhead
After reading the early review for Jarhead posted by Variety, it was hard to sum up the feelings they had towards the film. Though they admit the film is solid, they also mention that you may leave the theatre unfulfilled. Why? Well, I am assuming one of the reasons may be that most are expecting a war film that features battles and mayhem; which this film only touches upon at best.

But maybe Variety missed the mark and didn't sum up the overall consensus. Or, maybe they are right on target. Let's see what these two new reviews for the film have to say.

Jarhead Early Review

Both the reviews come in from the good people over at AICN. Both also claim that Jarhead is a solid film and both do admit that there are some aspects that need to be looked over.

I don't know what the overall audience thought of the film, but it seemed to be received rather schizophrenically... there was a good amount of applause after the movie, but every conversation I overheard as I walked back to my car seemed to be, "I wanted more..." or "I expect it to be better..."

On the whole, I found myself never really getting personally invested in the story. I can't really explain it. I really liked the movie a lot, thought it was masterfully directed, had some great imagery (the oil fields on fire were haunting) and had some amazing performances, but I never once lost myself in the story. I don't know why I felt that distance, but it was definitely there.

Don't think that the distance translated to boredom for me. I was always engaged with what I saw onscreen. I think it's a really damn solid movie, but I never had that personal investment that I'm used to having in movies I like this much. Weird.

This film is absolutely stunning. Is it a great war film, perhaps. Though Wars do not make films great. Heh, sorry, couldn’t resist. The first GULF WAR was less of a “great war” and more of an absolutely perfectly executed and planned series of maneuvers and actions. The U.S. struck so quickly and so intensely that when it was over, I thought… That’s it? I remember thinking about how we had become GORT – just so technologically advanced that we could just eliminate trouble spots by snapping our fingers.

The side of the war that we didn’t really see was the grunt side. The guys walking in the desert. The ones that this Video Game war left in the dirt. JARHEAD is that story.

As the end credits roll, different folks will react in different ways. This isn’t a film to cheer. As our current situation kinda shows, there really wasn’t much accomplished in the first Gulf War of lasting significance. The enemy was merely beaten back. But at the end of the day, we’re back over there, doing essentially the same thing, only this time… it isn’t a video game war.

Judging by the reviews, if you are seeking a drama in a war setting then this film is for you. If you are seeking a straight up war movie, you may want to skip it.

Jarhead comes to theatres on November 11th.
