Let's face it, video game adaptations do not offer
the guaranteed success, or box office numbers that novel adaptations usually
do. Actually, it is hard to think of one video game adaptation that has
been heralded by just about anybody. However, it looks like we may soon
witness a shifting tide that will push Hollywood as close to video games
as they are to comic books.
With the arrival of two popular scripts, Splinter Cell and Halo
[nearly shit myself], that have unprecedented backing, both financially
and with talent, we may just see some video games that could convince critics
and the global box office alike.
Therefore, picking up on this trend, Dimension films has returned to Dracula
with the adaptation of Castlevania.
Castlevania Boards Dimension
According to Variety,
Dimension Films has closed a North American distribution deal on Castlevania,
a thriller based on the Konami videogame franchise that Paul W.S. Anderson
will adapt and direct.
Studio wouldn't comment on its investment, but others said it will be a
significant percentage of a budget expected to be $50 million. Though Anderson
is also attached to direct a remake of Death Race 2000 at Paramount,
he has already begun writing the bloodsucker storyline for Castlevania
and is expected to put the film into production by next summer.
Anderson is also busy with other adaptations including
Dead or Alive; a film Anderson co-produced with Jeremy Bolt and
that is currently in post-production.
Variety also mentions that Anderson is currently working on the
screenplay for Residential Evil 3; a script that has created a
bit of a bidding war with Impact Films.
So, I guess this means that not all future video game adaptation will be
top-notch.
