Even though Syriana only experienced a limited release this last weekend, the film starring George Clooney and Matt Damon [among other names] still showed some major box office zeal.
Syriana Box Office
According to Variety, the Warner Bros political thriller Syriana, a film about the oil industry, lit up the box office with early estimated predicting the film to have the the best per-screen average for a Thanksgiving weekend and the second highest of 2005.
Sure, Syriana only made $553,372 over the extended Thanksgiving weekend, but that is from only five screens showing the limited release. For 2005, Syriana had a three-day weekend per-screen average of
$74,429, a number that lies only behind Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride, which came in at
$77,633.
What does the box office numbers for Syriana mean? Well, nothing much yet, but the popularity of the limited release could be a solid indicator that moviegoers are ready for more complex political drama. Either that, or they love watching a not-so-handsome George Clooney.
Warner distributor Dan Fellman described the Syriana bow, which drew equal numbers of adult men and women, as "nothing short of sensational." The film continues on five screens next week and have a wide release on December 9th.
Syriana had a limited release on November 23rd.
