The Ice Harvest
The Ice Harvest has always looked like one of those films that could be a surprise hit if only for the fact that almost everybody barely knew anything about the film. However, the reviews have begun to pop up and they are, well, frigid.
Ice Harvest REviews
The Ice Harvest is a wickedly funny thriller about thick thieves and thin ice.
It's Christmas Eve in rainy, icebound Wichita, Kansas, and this year Charlie Arglist (John Cusack) just might have something to celebrate. Charlie, an attorney for the sleazy businesses of Wichita, and his unsavory associate, the steely Vic Cavenaugh (Billy Bob Thornton), have just successfully embezzled $2,147,000 from Kansas City boss Bill Guerrard (Randy Quaid).
Even so, the real prize for Charlie would be the stunning Renata (Connie Nielsen), who runs the Sweet Cage strip club. Charlie's fondest Christmas wish is to slip out of town with Renata. But, as daylight fades and a storm whirls, everyone from Charlie's drinking buddy Pete Van Heuten (Oliver Platt) to the local police begin to wonder just what exactly is in Charlie's Christmas stocking. For Charlie, the 12 hours of Christmas Eve are filled with nonstop twists and turns, both on the ice and off.
So far the average reviews for The Ice Harvest have been far below par, with two such reviews below.

If you think that a noir crime drama in the vein of Elmore Leonard meets the Coen Brothers by the director of "Caddyshack" would seem like just the right alternative to the holiday blahs, then "The Ice Harvest" probably sounds as good on paper as it did to whomever financed it. Then again, if you're looking for a comedy that actually offers laughs, you might want to look elsewhere.
Who knows what went wrong with this attempt to play with noir archetypes? Obviously, the Coen Brothers have done it so well so many times and Harold Ramis' cast is just as strong as any of them, but "The Ice Harvest" is comprised mainly of things we've seen before combined with things that just don't work.
Anyone expecting laughs from this dark holiday comedy will be disappointed by the lack of real humor in this ho-ho-horrible movie.

MiraJeff here with a look at Harold Ramis’ latest offering, The Ice Harvest. Although it’s true that Ramis is one of comedy’s most gifted minds, his latest caper is a serious misfire.
The Ice Harvest is a dark comedy that never manages to quite find its footing, plagued by an uneven tone very much like Death to Smoochy. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to laugh at Cusack’s inept criminal or pity him. And in what’s essentially a glorified cameo, Billy Bob plays the same acerbic pessimist he’s been phoning in for a few movies now. It’s like he’s just trying to get extra mileage out of the bitter characters he’s played before.
