Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Butterbeer for all!
After a mere 10 days in release, the latest film adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s enormously popular Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, has grossed an estimated $408 million worldwide after a $102 million three-day average domestically. That average puts the film just shy of reigning three-day champ, 2002’s Spider Man which pulled in a whopping $114 million in its opening weekend.

Full Goblet of Fire Box Office

According to BBC News, nearly half of the total revenue rests in the United States, making this fourth installment of the franchise the most profitable yet. It leads 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ($90 million), 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ($88 million), and last summer’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ($93 million)—all formidable debuts.

Declining box office revenue is by now common knowledge to those who follow the charts. It appears, thankfully, that the Thanksgiving 2005 box office was a bonafide success taking in over $218 million, a slight 3% jump from last year according to Guardian Unlimited. Potter is amid a number of other successful films like the Nov. 18 debut of the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and the Nov. 4 Disney release Chicken Little, $58 million and $118 million so far, respectively.

The impeccable turnout of Potter marks a high note on an otherwise dismal box office year and sparks hope of a better year end season. Several hopeful hits are still due this winter, including Columbia Pictures’s Rob Marshall pic Memoirs of a Geisha, MTV Production’s Aeon Flux, and the Disney/Walden Pictures children’s fare Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. All are set for a December release which may combine for an overall positive increase. Potter has proven a much-needed jump start. President of box-office tracker “Exhibitor Relations,” Paul Dergarabedian, said: "You've got to look at Harry Potter as being the savior of the box office right now.” Thanks to you Mr. Potter!
