It was only yesterday that I had a discussion about the actor Peter O'Toole and his part in the porn-ish film Caligula. You know, he was the dirty Caesar who had all the 'fish'.
Well, if you don't know what I am talking about, it may just be for the better. Even with what may probably be one of the dirtiest roles in the history of film, Peter O'Toole has remained a prominent and respected actor who is still cranking out films today. One such film that he is currently working on is Venus, a film that has recently been acquired by Miramax for distribution rights in the US and the UK.
Venus Picked by Miramax
According to Variety, though Roger Michell only started directing the film this Monday in London, Miramax has already moved in for distribution rights. The film will feature a cast that includes Peter O'Toole, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Griffiths, Leslie Phillips and Jodie Whittaker.
Venus is just one in the latest string of acquisitions made by new Miramax Films president Daniel Battsek. Other acquisitions by the company include Tsotsi, the official South African selection for foreign-language film, and the Stephen Frears-directed The Queen, starring Helen Mirren, James Cromwell and Michael Sheen.
Miramax will handle distribution in the US and has handed down the responsibility of the UK to Buena Vista.
Venus tells the story of a pair of veteran actors, Maurice and Ian, whose daily routine is disrupted by the arrival of Ian's grandniece. O'Toole and Phillips play the grizzled thesps, and newcomer Whittaker plays the teen.
