I will admit that I pity the smaller films that will be released this December. With big swingers such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia in theatres, it is hard for any of the little guys to get some love.

One such film, for instance, is the upcoming pic from The Weinstein Company titled Transamerica. During the last day we have actually received a couple of brief alerts claiming that not only was Transamerica not only a good film, but surprisingly humorous as well.

The only ding I can see moviegoers having over this film is the topic it discusses-- transsexuality [if that is not a word, I just made it up].

Transamerica

Bree is a perfectly adjusted conservative transsexual woman. Born Stanely, a genetic male, she's about to take the final step to becoming the woman Stanley always wanted to be - until she finds out that she is the parent of a long-lost 17 year-old son. Afraid to tell the rebellious teenager the truth, Bree embarks on a journey with him that will challenge and change both their lives and bring them closer to the truth of their connection. Transamerica is a funny, touching, completely modern look at the modern American family, starring Emmy award winner Felicity Huffman and Kevin Zegers.

Sure, the topic can be a bit touchy for some, but if you can handle The Birdcage [hilarious!], then you can definitely handle Transamerica. Check out a snippet of a review for Transamerica posted over at Variety below:

"Sideways" turns inside out in "Transamerica." Laugh-out-loud funny, tartly off-color and ultimately touching, this road movie involving the cross-country adventures of a persnickety transsexual, and the runaway street hustler son whose existence is news to her, reps a triumphantly genre-bending big-screen bow for writer-director Duncan Tucker. An adventurous U.S. distrib willing to put marketing muscle behind an outspoken comedy, one that feels like vintage John Waters scripted by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, could reap controversy of the former's works and approach kudos-driven B.O. of the latters.' Internationally, it should travel well beyond niche fests to develop crossover appeal in theatrical and homevid.

Transamerica will have a limited release in New York and LA on December 2nd and will then appear in the top twenty markets on December 23rd.
