Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain” garnered seven nominations for January’s Golden Globes including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and acting nods for Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams.

63rd Annual Golden Globes Nominees

Competing with “Brokeback” in the best motion picture—drama category is Woody Allen’s London romantic comedy “Match Point”; David Cronenberg’s thriller, “A History of Violence”; George Clooney’s sophomore directorial attempt, the period political piece “Good Night, and Good Luck”; and Fernando Meirelles’s political drama “The Constant Gardener.”

Drama’s counterpart, the music or comedy race, includes Noah Baumbach’s “The Squid and the Whale”; the World War II burlesque dance hall picture “Mrs. Henderson Presents”; the Johnny Cash biopic, “Walk the Line”; Joe Wright’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice”; and the Nathan Lane-Mathew Broderick Broadway musical, “The Producers.”

In the acting department, Maria Bello (“A History of Violence”), Felicity Huffman (“Transamerica”), Gwyneth Paltrow (“Proof”), Charlize Theron (“North Country”), and Ziyi Zhang (“Memoirs of a Geisha”) have all been tapped for their performances in a motion picture drama. On the musical or comedy side, Dame Judi Dench (“Ms. Henderson Presents”), Keira Knightley (“Pride and Prejudice”), Laura Linney (“The Squid and the Whale”), Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”), and Sarah Jessica Parker (“The Family Stone”) have all been honored.

As expected, the best actor race is a much tighter race. Along with Ledger Russell Crow (“Cinderella Man”), Terrence Howard (“Hustle and Flow”), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (“Capote”), and David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck”) round out the completion for their performances in a drama. For comedy, Depp will run against Pierce Brosnan (“The Matador”), Jeff Daniels (“The Squid and the Whale”), Nathan Lane (“The Producers”), Cillian Murphy (“Breakfast On Pluto”), and Joaquin Phoenix (“Walk the Line”).

Supporting Roles only get one category. This year the acting race belongs Will Ferrell for “The Producers”, George Clooney for “Syriana,” Matt Dillon for “Crash,” Paul Giamatti for “Cinderella Man,” and Bob Hoskins for “Mrs. Henderson Presents.” Supporting actress nods went out to Williams, Scarlett Johansson for “Match Point,” Shirley MacLaine for “In Her Shoes,” Frances McDormand for “North Country,” and Rachel Weisz for “The Constant Gardener.”

Amid the sea of expected nominees were some unlikely candidates: Russel Crowe scored with his performance as down-trodden boxer in Ron Howard’s “Cinderella Man”; Johnny Depp won an unlikely nomination for best actor in a musical or comedy for last summer’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” despite mixed acting reviews; and a best supporting actor nod went to Will Ferrell for his exuberant performance in “The Producers.”

Left out of the races for the most part is Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” although he did receive one nomination for his directorial effort. Other big name films passed over are Steven Spielberg’s 1970s Olympic terrorist murders film “Munich” (despite one for directing), “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” and “Star Wars: Episode III.”

Sir Anthony Hopkins will be awarded the Cecil B. DeMille award for excellency.

The awards will be presented Jan. 16th on NBC. Check your local listings for more information.

Stay tuned for updates.
