Now that 2005 is beginning to wrap up it is time for the studios to begin 'suggesting' their films for various Oscar categories. One such highly debated category is that of 'visual effects', something that King Kong has recently stepped into only to oust another major hit-- Sin City.
Sure, all of these films probably do feature special effects that rival those of Sin City, but the fact that the Robert Rodriguez film is stylized into one grand effect through out the course of the film is very deserving of attention. However, with so much competition this year I guess we should have figured some of our favorite 'eye-candy' films would miss the boat.
Since Sin City was created with three different f/x houses (one for each storyline), if the film was nominated by the Academy for visual effects there would be no visual effects supervisor to nominate. Instead, the Academy would be forced to nominate director Robert Rodriguez for the award; something that has never been done in Oscar history. Rodriguez had recently quit the Directors Guild of America in order to co-direct Sin City with creator Frank Miller.
On January 25th all of the studios will have a chance to show a special 15-minute reel from their selected films that will contain a ton of the most impressive effects shots. The Academy will then announce the final nominees on January 31st.
